Summer Vacation

July 1, 2008

The staff here at Current Skate of Mind has an announcement to make. We know this will come as great blow, so we want to be sure that our dear readers are sitting down. Ready? Here goes:

School’s out for the summer!

And by this, we mean that there will be no new CSOM installments until mid-September. We realize that this is devastating, but we offer the following consolations: 1) all those excellent archived installments (43 to be exact) which you can access in the column over to the right under “Recent Posts” or “Search by Topic” or “Archives”; 2) you can also peruse the archived postings on our funny little pet project called “Cusp of Greatness”, also accessible in the column over to the right; 3) and finally, you can enjoy all those fine postings of other internet luminaries located under “Interesting Links.”

In the meantime, you can imagine us at the beach (anxiously applying SPF 75), sipping margaritas at corner cafes, and working diligently on the greatest book ever written about the sport of figure skating.

Will we also still be coaching oodles of young prodigies? Yes.

Will we therefore still be donning scarf, mittens, and snowpants on a daily basis throughout the summer months? Yes.

Will we miss whipping up weekly installments with obsessive regularity and receiving your insta-feedback in return? Yes.

Will we be back in September with a vengeance ready to entertain, spin verbal twizzles, and elicit the occasional chuckle? Yes.

Are we enjoying referring to ourselves in the plural? Yes, obviously a little too much.

With utmost seriousness, thank you for reading, commenting, and for generally encouraging this endeavor. The response to this site has been nothing short of thrilling.

Until we meet again in cyberland, we leave you with the most clichéd and well-meaning of poems, the one oft repeated in our world of rinks: Skate Great!

Sincerely,

Jocelyn Jane Cox and the Dedicated Staff of Current Skate of Mind

In order to assist in a bit of market research, please take a moment to vote for your favorite CSOM posting thus far by clicking on “comments” below. Which one stands out? FYI, the installments that happen to have received the most “hits” are Review: Blades of Glory (September), Dear Adults (April) and Ice Dance: Crisis or Opportunity? (March). My personal favorite? Glossary of Falls (March). This one holds a special place in my heart at least in part because fellow coaches are still coming up to me and sharing their worst falls and defining new ones. 🙂

And/or: please Suggest a Topic for CSOM. While I am not lacking ideas for future installments, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you!

Yes, you deserve a break and a tall glass of lemonade. My vote is for the one you did on practice recently and my suggestion? I bet you could do something good with Zambonis, if you haven’t already!

  2. NYCSkater Says:

Dear Adults is my favorite posting because as an adult skater I can relate to it all. It was as if it was written about me!

  3. dancer Says:

How will we get through our Tuesdays?!

I think one of your best ones was the one a ways back about IJS and how many changes there are all season and at the last minute. I remember that it started off w/ another IJS change coming out just as a skater was getting out onto the ice. Still makes me chuckle.

As far as suggestion…can’t think of any…you seem to have our sport covered.

  4. Jerry L Says:

I thought the one about ice dance music was pretty funny. I forwarded that one on to a few people. Have a good summer.

  5. Lori Lee Says:

Dear Adults was my favorite. How about the Zamboni? Everyone I know wants to drive one, and no one really understands what they do, but when they are “down” it’s not a good day at the rink!

  6. Lori Lee Says:

Or how about skating costumes….there’s a topic that you can sink your teeth into. I’m sure you can reference some “interesting” skating costumes that you’ve seen/worn over the years (e.g. Nancy Kerrigan in Vera Wang, Jayne Torvil as the bullfighter’s cape, etc.)

  7. DVJ Says:

My favorite post was from way back in December,”Stuff”….anyone who skated can relate to the nostalgia you feel going through all your old skating things from back in the day.
    Have a great summer!

  8. malinda Says:

It is sooooo hard to pick just one, but I think my favorite two posts were the one about jury duty and the one about “stuff”. Nonetheless, for me, it was also a real treat to read the short story – it really drew me in. I will miss my Tuesday cool down – here in the desert ice is the stuff of dreams in the summer. We’ll have to send some solar vibes to your freezing fingers. Enjoy your break!

  9. Aaron Says:

Easily Glossary of falls is my favorite!

It’s like a televesion show that doesn’t come back until the fall…but thankfully you didn’t leave us on a cliff hanger!

  10. Ann-Marie Says:

Does this mean that I have to call you more often? I have 2 favs…last week’s “Beat the Heat” was life changing and of course, “Skating Friend-O-Mine”

  11. Glossary of Falls is my favorite. I believe I commented that I was the slo-mo. Have a great summer and read you in a few months! -Susan

  12. Laura Says:

I like the one about on-ice traffic! Have a good summer…!

  13. bamboo-boo Says:

Jocelyn, Enjoy your well deserved time off and many Margaritas this summer.

My faves are “rink to rink to rink” and “PSA Conference: Power in Numbers”. I’ll be looking forward to the new installments in September!

  14. Martina Says:

I loved “Thanks, Mom” and “Skating Friend-O-Mine” Perhaps a little light on the funny put heavy on the substance. Gotta love it!! I will definitely be missing the B-L-O-G !

Ideas? Something Hockey related could be fun?

    Enjoy the lemonade and sip-slowly.

  15. Paula Says:

My vote: Skating Mom Shuttle! My suggestion: Keep these coming. Your writing is really fun.

  16. BA Says:

I really enjoyed CSOM so far. All installments have been so interesting. Looking forward to your (plural) starting up again next month. Can hardly believe the summer is half gone. Yikes!

  17. Aaron Says:

Is vacation over yet? I miss the pieces!
